Tragedy has once again struck Lagos politics, as another elected official has died, just hours after the shocking death of Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
Hon. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, the Councillor representing Ward F (Bajulaiye-Folagoro) in Shomolu Local Government, was confirmed dead in the early hours of Sunday, September 21, 2025.
Her passing marks the third female councillor in Lagos State to die in the last two months, an unsettling trend that has left the political community in mourning.
The Executive Chairman of Shomolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, announced her death in a condolence message, describing Mayabikan as “a humble, cheerful, friendly, and easy-going representative whose death was sudden and shocking.”
He wrote:
“We regret to announce the painful death of our Ward F Councillor, Hon. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan. This tragic news has sent shockwaves through our community, as it was never expected or foreseen.”
Mayabikan’s death comes closely after the losses of two other female councillors: Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, who died on August 13, 2025, just two weeks after her swearing-in, and Hon. Zainab Kosoko Shotayo of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, who passed away six days later after a brief illness.
Earlier, Badagry Today reported the sudden death of Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, who had been sworn in less than two months ago alongside Chairman Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren, popularly known as RIKAY.
Following her passing, Badagry West LCDA issued an official statement mourning her demise. The press release read in part:
“With deep pain and an overwhelming sense of loss, the Executive Chairman, Legislative Arm, Management, and the entire people of Badagry West LCDA announce the sudden and heartbreaking death of our Vice Chairman, Princess Remilekun Nutayi.
Princess Nutayi, who assumed office less than two months ago, answered the call of her Creator at a time her wealth of experience, dedication, and passion for service were most needed. Her untimely death is not only a great loss to Badagry West LCDA but also to the entire Badagry community.”
Princess Nutayi, a proud daughter of royal heritage and daughter of His Royal Majesty, Oba Oyekan Adekanmi Ilufemiloye to Possi III, the Alapa of Apa Egun Awori Kingdom, had previously served with distinction as Supervisor for Education before becoming Vice Chairman.
Her death leaves a painful vacuum in leadership and governance, both in Badagry West and across the state.
As the state reels from these consecutive losses, prayers and condolences continue to pour in for the families and communities of the departed leaders.
