The Lagos State Government has announced that more than three million residents are expected to take part in the 2025 edition of Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day, a festival dedicated to celebrating Yoruba heritage, culture, and spirituality.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Arts, Culture and Tourism, Hon. Idris Aregbe, the event was described as “a living expression of our traditions and a celebration of Yoruba spirituality as an important part of Nigeria’s cultural and religious landscape.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu has already declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday to mark the occasion, a move seen as further cementing Lagos’ commitment to preserving indigenous traditions while fostering inclusivity.
According to Aregbe, the scale of participation reflects Lagos’ standing as a cultural hub.
“This is not just a holiday. It is an opportunity for millions of Lagosians to reconnect with their roots, appreciate ancestral heritage, and experience the beauty of cultural practices that continue to shape our identity as a people,” he said.
This year’s festival is expected to be colourful and deeply spiritual, featuring traditional prayers, rituals, processions, and cultural displays dedicated to the worship of the Òrìṣà (deities). Government offices, schools, and several businesses will shut down, giving residents full opportunity to participate.
The State Government, while urging participants to observe the celebrations peacefully and respectfully, emphasized that Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day is not just a cultural showcase but also a platform for unity.
“With three million voices coming together in honour of tradition, Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day goes beyond festivities. It is history, faith, and cultural pride expressed in harmony. Lagos remains a beacon of unity, where every heritage finds its place,” Aregbe concluded.
