General Hospital Badagry Achieves Zero Maternal Mortality in 90 Days

In what has been described as a milestone achievement for maternal healthcare delivery in Lagos State, the General Hospital, Badagry, has recorded zero maternal deaths for three consecutive months.

The feat, which covers the months of May, June, and July 2025, was achieved at the Mother and Child Care (MCC) Centre of the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology department.

Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Olatunde Bakare, hailed the development as a triumph worth celebrating, describing it as a testament to dedication, teamwork, and divine grace.

“Congratulations to all. Thank God for His mercies endureth forever. Please keep it up,” Dr. Bakare said, while urging staff not to relent in ensuring safe deliveries for expectant mothers. He noted that every successful delivery without loss of life secures the continuity of generations and safeguards the joy of families.

Presenting the report to the hospital’s management, the Director of Clinical Services & Training and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr. Akinwunmi Akinyemi, expressed gratitude to God, the hospital leadership, and all members of staff for the collective effort that made the milestone possible.

“It is with utmost pleasure and gratitude to God that I inform you that there has been no mortality for the past three months in our department,” Dr. Akinyemi said. “This could only have been possible by the relentless efforts of everyone—our dedicated nurses, laboratory staff, pharmacists, record officers, attendants, facility managers, and support staff. The unflinching support of the hospital management was equally crucial.”

He described the achievement as “unique and deserving of celebration,” charging staff to sustain the momentum so that the hospital can continue to contribute significantly to reducing maternal mortality rates in Badagry and Lagos State as a whole.

The zero-mortality record is seen as a major breakthrough in Badagry’s maternal healthcare journey, considering Nigeria’s persistent struggles with high maternal mortality ratios. The hospital management assured residents that the commitment to safe motherhood remains a top priority, and efforts will be intensified to build on this success.
