Tragedy struck on Monday morning when a Toyota Highlander SUV rammed into a commercial minibus illegally loading passengers at Volkswagen Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The lone driver of the SUV, identified only by his vehicle with registration number APP 150 EY, died instantly in the crash. The accident also involved a painted T4 minibus with registration number KJA 328 XH, which was parked on the roadside to pick up passengers.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the Highlander, which was reportedly on top speed, lost control before crashing into the stationary bus with devastating impact.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene, extricated the deceased driver from the mangled wreck, and handed the remains over to the Ojo Police Division. The body was later deposited at the C-Niger Mortuary, Abule Ado.
The accident caused significant traffic congestion along the busy Mile 2 corridor, but LASTMA officers swiftly cleared the wreckage and towed both vehicles to the Ojo Police Division for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the family of the deceased while warning motorists against reckless driving and speeding.
He also condemned the indiscriminate practice of commercial drivers picking up passengers along the road instead of designated bus stops.
“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways,” Bakare-Oki stated. “We shall continue to intensify enforcement and sustain public enlightenment campaigns to prevent needless tragedies.”
