There was chaos in Aku community, Imo State, when a man disrupted his own mother’s burial, insisting that the ceremony would not go ahead unless certain conditions were met.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased’s first son, identified as Uzoma Nwawere, stopped the burial on grounds that his married sisters had allegedly disrespected him and neglected his rightful place as the family’s first son.
A retired police officer at the scene explained that the late matriarch and her husband, the late Godwin Nwawere, had one son—Uzoma—and several daughters, most of whom are married to men from Mbano. According to him, while the daughters had supported their mother during her lifetime, Uzoma felt sidelined and unfairly treated.
The ex-officer alleged that Uzoma believed his sisters “connived” with their late mother to deny him the respect traditionally accorded to a first son. He added that Uzoma had been living at the family house, often struggling financially, while his sisters lived more comfortably in their marriages.
When their mother passed away, Uzoma reportedly insisted that before her burial could take place in the family compound—which he now claims as inheritance—his sisters and their husbands must first “settle” him.
A video circulating online shows a half-dug grave in the compound with a crowd of relatives and villagers gathered around, engaging in heated arguments. The tense atmosphere, coupled with the cloudy weather, underscored the gravity of the family dispute that stalled the burial.
