Badagry LG Chairman Hunpe to Lead Fitila Procession at 2025 International Day for the Abolition of Slave Trade Today

The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, will today officially lead the historic Fitila Procession as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day for the Abolition of Slave Trade in Badagry.

The event, organized by the Confederation of Badagry Tourism Practitioners (CBTP), is solely sponsored by the Badagry Local Government under the leadership of Hon. Hunpe.

According to a statement signed by Sewedo Olalekan Samuel, Special Secretary to the Chairman, the procession will be personally led by Hon. Hunpe, who has been instrumental in uniting tourism stakeholders in Badagry under one umbrella body, the CBTP.

“This year’s commemoration is particularly significant because it marks the first major assignment of the newly unified tourism platform in Badagry. It is a milestone that reflects the Chairman’s vision for synergy, unity, and the promotion of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage,” the statement read.

The International Day for the Abolition of Slave Trade is a global observance dedicated to remembering the transatlantic slave trade and honoring the resilience of those who fought for its abolition. For Badagry, one of the major slave routes during the era, the day holds deep historical importance.

Residents, tourists, and cultural stakeholders are expected to join the procession and other activities lined up for the day, as Badagry once again takes its place at the center of history and remembrance.

The local government has urged the public and the media to support the collective efforts of Badagry’s tourism stakeholders in preserving and projecting the town’s heritage with dignity and accuracy.
