A dramatic scene unfolded at the Akure Customary Court this week as a heartbroken woman, Mrs. Folakemi Adebayo, accused her ex-husband and the lawyer who handled their divorce case of betrayal and manipulation.
In a moment that stunned the courtroom, Folakemi stormed in visibly emotional and tearful, alleging that her former husband, Mr. Emmanuel Oyebanji, had secretly married the female lawyer who represented them during their separation process.
According to Hope Newspaper, a publication owned by the Ondo State Government, Folakemi claimed the lawyer, who was supposed to be neutral, had been romantically involved with her ex-husband while the divorce case was still in court.
“She ruined my settlement! I trusted her to be neutral, not to sleep with my husband!” she cried in court, accusing the lawyer of using her position to influence the case in Emmanuel’s favour.
Folakemi asked the court to revisit the divorce verdict and launch an investigation into what she described as professional misconduct and unethical behaviour on the part of the lawyer.
But Emmanuel, who kept calm throughout the session, denied all the allegations. He told the court that his ex-wife had moved out of their home less than a year into the marriage and had completely cut off communication.
“She left me and never looked back. I was alone and later found comfort in someone who understood me,” he said. Emmanuel insisted that his relationship with the lawyer did not begin until after the divorce was finalized.
The lawyer, who was also present in court, firmly denied any wrongdoing. She explained that her dealings with Emmanuel were strictly professional during the case and that there was no romantic relationship while the matter was still in court.
“There was nothing unethical between us during the legal process. I did my job, and I did it fairly,” she said, as murmurs of disbelief echoed through the courtroom.
After listening to all sides, the presiding judge, Justice Ireti Sunday, said the court could not make decisions based on emotions or suspicion alone.
“This court cannot act on suspicion. There is no evidence before us to prove that there was any conspiracy or misconduct between Mr. Emmanuel and the lawyer during the divorce,” the judge ruled.
The case was subsequently dismissed.
Despite the ruling, the emotional outburst from Mrs. Adebayo left the courtroom with lingering questions and mixed reactions, adding a controversial twist to what had seemed like a closed chapter.
