The Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed two senior academic staff members over serious cases of gross misconduct, including sexual harassment and misappropriation of over ₦10.6 million in university funds.
The decision was approved during the university’s 143rd Statutory Governing Council Meeting, held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
In an official statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, LASU confirmed that the two lecturers—Professor Olatunji Tajudeen Abanikannada and Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem—were found guilty of various offences ranging from inhumane treatment of students, sexual harassment, to financial irregularities.
Professor Abanikannada, who was the Dean of the School of Agriculture, Epe Campus, was dismissed after a viral video revealed the degrading conditions under which 400-level students were kept during their practical coursework. According to the university, the students were made to stay on the farm from as early as 6:30 a.m. till 10:00 p.m., without access to food, water, or proper shelter—even during heavy downpours.
The report also accused Abanikannada of sexually harassing female students, emotionally and physically traumatizing staff and students through threats and verbal abuse, and illegally collecting money from members of the university community—violating multiple university rules.
Similarly, Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem, the former Coordinator of the Department of Animal Sciences, also at the Epe Campus, was dismissed for gross financial misconduct. She was found to have diverted proceeds from the sale of farm produce—totaling over ₦10.6 million—into her personal bank account, instead of remitting the funds to the university’s treasury as required.
Her offences also included a failure to follow established academic procedures and dereliction of duty, further compounding the allegations against her.
“These acts, tantamount to serious misconduct, are in clear violation of the University’s Conditions of Service for Senior Staff (2017, as amended),” the Registrar stated.
The LASU Management has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity, discipline, and accountability across all levels of the institution.
