The Federal Government has officially fixed 16 years as the minimum age for gaining admission into any tertiary institution in Nigeria.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) held on Tuesday in Abuja.
While addressing stakeholders at the meeting, Dr. Alausa made it clear that the 16-year benchmark is now the official and non-negotiable age for entry into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
He warned that any admission conducted outside JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) would be regarded as illegal. Institutions or individuals found guilty of bypassing the system or engaging in admission fraud, he said, would face legal action.
The policy meeting is held annually to decide admission guidelines and procedures for the upcoming academic session across all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
