In what appears to be a bold political move ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Osun State Governor and Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Coalition, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has taken his campaign to Ondo State, declaring his mission to wrest power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former governor was a trusted ally of President Tinubu until their relationship went unredeemable ahead of the 2023 general elections
Aregbesola, who was warmly received by opposition leaders and supporters in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday, said his visit marked the beginning of a strategic mobilisation across the South West. He called for unity among party faithful and members of the wider opposition, stressing that only a united front can defeat the APC at the polls.
“Let us work together, let us put personal interests aside, and let’s get united,” Aregbesola told party members and grassroots mobilisers during his address. “We should remember that we have many elections ahead—presidential, National Assembly, and state assembly elections. We still have time, but it’s a big task. If we unite, we won’t be defeated.”
He emphasised that the ADC coalition has already begun to attract major political heavyweights across party lines. According to him, figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have aligned with the ADC’s vision to form a broad-based opposition platform capable of challenging the Tinubu administration.
In a Facebook post shared after the meeting, Aregbesola wrote:
“We thank the great people of Ondo State and the leaders of the opposition coalition in the state for receiving me warmly as I begin the South West mobilisation strategy meetings, starting with a visit to stakeholders and grassroots mobilisers in Ondo State.”
He described the ADC as a principled movement focused on restoring people-centered governance.
“The ADC represents a PRINCIPLED STAND – to put the PEOPLE FIRST at the centre of government and politics,” he stated. “Our goal is to bring a PEOPLE-FRIENDLY GOVERNMENT and PEOPLE-FRIENDLY POLITICS that truly place the people at the heart of governance.”
With 2027 still two years away, Aregbesola’s early mobilisation in the South West signals a determined effort to unseat his former political ally turned rival, President Tinubu.
As political tensions simmer and alliances shift, the former minister's move is being closely watched by both supporters and critics ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested election cycle.
