Pandemonium broke out in Ajara, Badagry, on Tuesday when a joint team of the Joint Task Force and the Nigeria Police Force rescued a suspected motorcycle thief from an angry mob attempting to administer jungle justice.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended with a stolen motorcycle, prompting a group of commercial motorcycle riders to gather and attempt to lynch him.
The JTF Public Relations Officer, Senayon Kotin, said security operatives responded to distress calls and intervened before the mob could carry out its threat.
According to Kotin, the crowd claimed the suspect had allegedly killed people in the past and that they had been searching for an opportunity to apprehend him.
The situation became more violent when security operatives attempted to move the suspect to a police station. The mob reportedly intercepted the security team on the road and attacked both the officers and the suspect, leaving some JTF personnel seriously injured.
Reinforcements from the Nigeria Police Force later arrived at the scene and succeeded in dispersing the crowd and bringing the situation under control.
The suspect is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital under heavy security, as authorities continue their investigation into the allegations against him.
