Badagry was awash with messages of unity, faith and communal harmony as prominent leaders across the ancient town marked the simultaneous commencement of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, urging residents to embrace sacrifice, compassion and peaceful coexistence.
Leading the chorus was Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, who described the convergence of Ash Wednesday and Ramadan as a divine reminder that Christians and Muslims serve one Almighty God.
In a heartfelt goodwill message shared on Facebook, Whingan drew from both the Bible and the Holy Quran to emphasize the oneness of God and the shared spiritual foundation of both faiths. He noted that the sacred seasons offered a powerful opportunity for reflection, renewal and deeper unity among the people of Badagry and Nigeria at large.
“As Christians begin Lent and Muslims commence Ramadan, I pray this season brings spiritual renewal, peace and blessings to our families and our land,” he said, calling on residents to allow faith to strengthen bonds rather than divide communities.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, urged both Christians and Muslims to use the season for deeper devotion, moral renewal and acts of kindness.
Hunpe described Badagry as a historic land where faith and culture have long coexisted in harmony, stressing that Lent and Ramadan should inspire reconciliation, compassion and collective responsibility toward the vulnerable. He prayed for wisdom in leadership and sustained peace and development across the local government.
From Olorunda Local Council Development Area, the Executive Chairman, Ajose Peter Kumayon, also extended warm felicitations to both faith communities, encouraging humility, repentance, self reflection and generosity.
Kumayon reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and community development, noting that unity across religious lines remained critical to building a peaceful and prosperous Olorunda LCDA. He called on residents to show compassion, especially to the less privileged, throughout the sacred period.
In Badagry West LCDA, Chairman Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren focused on the spiritual depth of Ramadan, urging Muslims to embrace patience, generosity and devotion while also highlighting the unique beauty of both faiths observing fasting seasons simultaneously.
He described the convergence of Ramadan and Lent as a rare moment of shared spiritual reflection that further strengthens communal bonds, calling on residents to pray for peace, unity and progress in Badagry, Lagos State, and the nation.
Adding a legislative voice, Setonji David, who represents Badagry Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, called for devotion, discipline and fervent prayers across the constituency.
He described the twin observances as a profound reminder of shared values such as sacrifice, compassion and self restraint, urging residents to go beyond fasting by embracing character building, generosity and peaceful coexistence.
Across the messages, one theme rang loud and clear unity in diversity.
Shared widely on Facebook, the goodwill messages reflected a collective resolve by Badagry leaders to use the sacred seasons as a platform to strengthen interfaith harmony, uplift the vulnerable and promote peace and development across the region.
As Ramadan and Lent unfold side by side, the leaders expressed confidence that sincere prayers, renewed faith and acts of compassion would usher in greater hope, stability and progress for Badagry and beyond.
