Badagry residents can look forward to easier access to National Identification Number registration following a major breakthrough by local government leaders and the Deputy Chief Whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
On Tuesday, the Chairmen of Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon; Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe; and Badagry West LCDA, Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren, met with officials of the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) in Badagry. They were joined by Hon. Engr. Setonji David, Deputy Chief Whip and representative of Badagry Constituency II, in a strategic session aimed at addressing long-standing registration challenges.
The NIMC delegation, led by Lagos State Coordinator Mr. Gbolahan Oluwatobiloba, listened to the concerns of the council chairmen, who highlighted severe congestion at existing centres due to limited facilities and staff shortages. While Olorunda LCDA has only one centre operating as an annex of Badagry Local Government, Badagry West LCDA currently has no centre at all.
In a joint appeal, the council leaders requested the establishment of additional centres—two each for Olorunda LCDA and Badagry Local Government, and two for Badagry West LCDA—to ease the burden on residents.
Speaking at the meeting, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe emphasized the councils’ readiness to provide all necessary support to ensure smooth and stress-free registration. Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon echoed the sentiment, pledging office space, staff, and logistical support for new centres, while Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren appealed for urgent intervention to provide Badagry West residents with access to NIN registration.
Hon. Engr. Setonji David stressed the importance of collective action, noting that the meeting was aimed at resolving the enormous challenges residents face during registration.
In response, NIMC approved the creation of new and more accessible registration centres—one additional centre each for Olorunda LCDA, Badagry Local Government, and Badagry West LCDA. Existing staff will be temporarily redeployed to the new centres while a comprehensive report is forwarded to NIMC headquarters in Abuja to ensure a long-term solution.
The council chairmen immediately began steps to implement the resolutions, committing to provide equipment, staff, and upgrades to existing centres. They also guided NIMC officials on an inspection tour of current facilities in Olorunda LCDA and Badagry Local Government.
The collaborative effort is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve service delivery, and make obtaining a National Identification Number easier for residents across Badagry Division.
