In a bold move to tackle the menace of indiscriminate waste dumping along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative (CBI), led by its Chairperson, Mrs. Tosin Whingan, the wife of Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency has launched a large-scale environmental intervention and advocacy campaign in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and other environmental stakeholders.
The exercise, which took place along the Morogbo–Agbara corridor, forms part of CBI’s continuous drive to restore cleanliness and order to the ever-busy expressway. The group decried the increasing habit of dumping refuse on the road median — an act that not only defaces the area but also poses serious health and environmental risks to residents and road users.
Addressing volunteers and community members during the exercise, Mrs. Whingan — who is also the wife of the House of Representatives member representing Badagry Federal Constituency, Hon. Joseph Gbenu Whingan — emphasized that the initiative was born out of the need to protect the environment and promote a sense of responsibility among residents.
“We cannot continue to watch our environment deteriorate because of poor waste habits,” she said. “This road is not just a passageway; it’s a symbol of our community’s image. Everyone must take responsibility for keeping it clean.”
The intervention combined hands-on clean-up operations with robust advocacy on circular economy principles — encouraging waste sorting, recycling, and waste-to-wealth opportunities for local communities. Traders, market leaders, transport operators, and residents joined volunteers and LAWMA personnel in clearing waste piles, sweeping the median, and restoring the area’s natural appeal.
Participants were also sensitized on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping, such as blocked drainage, flooding, and the spread of diseases. Environmental experts at the event highlighted how adopting sustainable practices could reduce pollution, enhance public health, and create jobs through recycling and reuse initiatives.
LAWMA officials present at the exercise commended the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative for taking the lead in mobilizing citizens to take ownership of their environment. They pledged continued collaboration with the group to ensure consistent monitoring and enforcement along the corridor.
Beyond the expressway, CBI has maintained an active presence across all three local councils in the Badagry Division — Badagry Local Government, Olorunda LCDA, and Badagry West LCDA — where it has carried out several clean-up drives, community sensitizations, and environmental campaigns.
Reiterating the organization’s long-term vision, Mrs. Whingan noted that the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative is not just a campaign but a movement aimed at changing attitudes and building a culture of environmental responsibility.
“Our mission is simple — to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Badagry, one community at a time,” she stated. “Through partnership, education, and action, we can transform our environment and preserve it for future generations.”
As the campaign gains momentum, stakeholders believe that sustained advocacy, community participation, and government partnership will be key to permanently ending the scourge of illegal dumping on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and ensuring a healthier, more habitable environment for all.
