The Buy and Sell Association in Badagry West Local Council Development Area has issued a public apology to two residents, Mr. Tanpinu Samuel and Mr. Francisco Sewedo, over a false accusation of fuel theft that recently circulated online.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 8, after two 25-litre kegs of fuel were found abandoned by the roadside around the Kankon area, close to the Badagry West LCDA Secretariat.
Findings later revealed that Samuel and Sewedo had discovered the fuel and responsibly handed it over to officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). In appreciation of their honesty, the Air Force personnel reportedly took their photographs before taking custody of the recovered items.
However, members of the Buy and Sell Association had, in error, published an online post alleging that the duo had stolen the fuel — a claim that quickly spread and caused brief tension in the community. The misunderstanding was later clarified at the APA Police Post, where it was officially reported.
When journalists visited the station on Thursday, representatives of the association admitted that the online post was misleading and confirmed that the two men were innocent.
The Acting Coordinator of the association, Mr. Aloya Segbenu, publicly acknowledged the error and offered an apology to the affected individuals.
“We realized the information we shared earlier was wrong. They were not involved in any theft. In fact, they did the right thing by returning the fuel to the Air Force. We sincerely regret the embarrassment this caused,” Segbenu said.
The association has since retracted the false report and appealed to the public to disregard the earlier publication.
