Presidency Slams El-Rufai, Labels Critics “Power-Hungry” Over Tinubu Ouster Plot

The Presidency has fired back at those calling for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s removal, branding them as “power-hungry politicians” desperate for relevance. Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made this known in a statement on X, in response to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s prediction that Tinubu would not win re-election in 2027.

El-Rufai, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, claimed Tinubu stood no chance in 2027, asserting that at best, the President would finish third if the polls go to a runoff. He challenged Tinubu to seek lessons from ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, recalling how power and influence could not prevent defeat in 2015.

Reacting, Onanuga described El-Rufai’s remarks as contradictory, noting that the former governor once admitted four years was insufficient to deliver “meaningful changes,” yet now leads efforts to oust Tinubu barely halfway through his tenure.

He highlighted the administration’s achievements, including rising foreign reserves, stock market boom, harmonisation of exchange rates, four months of consecutive inflation decline, and social interventions like student loans and cash transfers. According to him, states and local governments are also enjoying increased federal allocations, enabling more capital projects and job creation.

Onanuga dismissed El-Rufai’s claims as political desperation, insisting Tinubu’s reforms have placed Nigeria on a path to prosperity. He vowed that El-Rufai’s statements would be revisited during campaigns, writing: “Please save the video. We shall confront Nasir with it when electioneering starts.”
