Badagry’s Spoken Word Poet, Victory Ashaka, Making Nigeria Proud on the World Stage at UNGA80

Badagry-born spoken word poet, Victory Ashaka, has once again put Nigeria on the global map, this time at the prestigious 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York.

Ashaka was among selected young global voices invited to the Theirworld High-Level SDG4 Dinner, an event dedicated to spotlighting how education can unlock solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges.

Sharing his excitement in a heartfelt Facebook post, the poet wrote:
"Still pinching myself! Honoured to be in the room with world leaders, business executives, philanthropists, youth, and civil society… It was a sincere pleasure to deliver a spoken word piece and share the panel with Catherine Russell (UNICEF Executive Director), Micheál Martin (Prime Minister of Ireland), Tom Fletcher (UN Under-Secretary-General), and fellow GYA, Arpan Patel."

For Ashaka, the night was not just about performance but also about connection. He described meeting Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former President, as a highlight and a personal reminder of the enduring legacy of leadership that continues to inspire the younger generation.

The evening also provided him the platform to host an exhibition stand on “The Education Issue”, amplifying the mission of Theirworld across its three central pillars: giving children the best start in life, ensuring safe learning spaces, and equipping them with skills for the future.

Ashaka, who has steadily built his reputation as one of Nigeria’s finest spoken word poets, is widely celebrated for using his art to push conversations on social change, education, and leadership. His rising influence demonstrates how voices from communities like Badagry can resonate powerfully on the world stage.

"What a night. What a memory. What a cause," Ashaka concluded, capturing the pride of not just his hometown but Nigeria as a whole.
