Leadership Dispute Turns Deadly in Iyanomo, Claims Two Lives

The incident was confirmed in a statement on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Fred Itua, who noted that the state government has already launched a full investigation into the killings.

The victims were reportedly murdered last week during a clash between rival factions fighting over control of the community.

According to the statement, the probe is being handled by the Edo State Special Security Squad, “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers”, working with security agencies and community leaders.

On Saturday, the investigative team, led by the Governor’s Chief Security Officer, CSP Osaro Roberts, and his Principal Security Officer, Okoh Saturday, visited the community to gather firsthand details about the incident.

During the visit, the Secretary of the Special Security Squad, Barr. John Izegaebe, condemned the killings, stressing that the government would not tolerate violence.

“This is unacceptable. The Governor has directed us to ensure that everyone involved in this heinous crime is identified, arrested, and prosecuted. No one is above the law,” Izegaebe said.

He added that the state government sympathizes with the victims’ families and assured them that justice will be served. He also warned that community disputes must be settled legally and not through bloodshed.

The government further reaffirmed Governor Okpebholo’s zero-tolerance stance on crime, warning that anyone instigating violence in Edo communities will face the full weight of the law.

Meanwhile, residents of Iyanomo Community, who welcomed the investigative team, expressed relief at the swift government response. They also appealed for sustained security presence in the area to prevent further clashes and restore lasting peace.
