Lagos Residents Unite Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence

In a powerful show of solidarity, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC) and supported by the European Union and International IDEA, organised an advocacy walk to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

The walk, which stretched from Onigbongbo LCDA to Ikeja LGA, drew a large turnout of advocates, volunteers, community members, and residents, all sending a clear message: Lagos State stands firm against SGBV.

As part of Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, the initiative educated commuters, traders, and passersby along the Ikeja axis about the dangers of SGBV and the importance of reporting cases. Participants also highlighted available pro bono services, including medical care, legal support, psychosocial counseling, and empowerment programs designed to help survivors and restore trust in the justice system.

With banners, placards, fliers, and flags, participants engaged the public directly, amplifying awareness, supporting survivors, and emphasising the need for collective action.

The success of the walk was underpinned by strong collaboration. DSVA’s partnership with RoLAC, along with support from LASHMA, the Office of SDGs, and a broad coalition—including local government staff, the Ministry of Justice, NYSC members, LASODA, LASTMA, LASAMBUS, Rapid Response Squad, the Bureau of the Public Defender, the Child Protection Network Lagos, NGOs, and survivors—showcased a united front against abuse.

The event reaffirmed that ending SGBV is not just an institutional responsibility but a societal one, calling on all Lagos residents to join the fight against abuse in every form.
