Unemployment: Lagos pushes for partnerships, promises 1,000 new jobs for youth

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged stakeholders from different sectors to join hands with the Lagos State Government in tackling youth unemployment.

Speaking at the 2025 Stakeholders’ Forum organized by the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, themed “Passion to Prosperity: Unlocking Youth Potential in Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Saliu-Hundeyin, announced plans to create 1,000 fresh jobs through the Graduate Internship Placement Programme (GIPP).

The governor described Lagos as a hub of creativity and innovation, where young people are already making waves in technology, fashion, music, agriculture, and other fields. He stressed the need to harness this passion and provide the right environment for it to thrive—through quality education, skills development, mentorship, funding, and a strong support system.

“Government must continue to build an ecosystem that turns passion into success,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that entrepreneurship remains key to wealth creation and innovation.

Guest speaker, Mallam Ahmed Gobir, who serves as President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), called on business leaders to view youth empowerment as an economic necessity rather than charity.

“Youth empowerment is not CSR; it is national security. Every idle youth is an opportunity lost; every empowered youth is GDP gained,” Gobir noted, urging companies to invest in young talent while encouraging youths to also embrace startups and self-employment opportunities.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, described the forum as a platform for aligning efforts to unlock youth potential and drive prosperity across the state.
