First Baby Girl in Over a Century Born Into Family After 108 Years of Boys

After more than 100 years of welcoming only boys, a Texas family is finally set to celebrate the arrival of a baby girl.

Michael Sherman, 34, a lieutenant with the Montgomery Fire Department, and his wife, Joacquia, 32, are expecting their second child — and to their surprise, it’s a girl.

“We honestly didn’t think it was possible,” Joacquia told ABC News. “I was convinced if we had another baby, it would be a boy, so hearing it was a girl completely shocked me.”

The couple, who already have a 5-year-old son, Mekhai, said he’s excited about becoming a big brother. “I know he’ll step into that role perfectly,” Michael said. “He’s really looking forward to meeting his little sister.”

The last girl born in Michael’s family was in 1917 — his great-aunt, Orah Belle Sherman, who later became a respected figure in Atlanta’s Civil Rights movement. “Finding out we’re having a girl felt incredible,” Michael said. “It’s like we get to honor her all over again.”

Michael recalled being caught off guard at the gender reveal. “I had just gotten off a shift and thought it was going to be a small gathering,” he said. But Joacquia, who works with the Transportation Security Administration at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, had secretly planned a surprise celebration with close family.

“It was important to make it special because this moment is so rare in our family,” she explained.

The baby is due on March 11, 2026, and the Shermans say they couldn’t be more grateful. “It’s truly a blessing,” Michael said. “After more than a century, this feels extra special.
