In a shocking twist, the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has sacked all of its Nigerian workers, citing alleged sabotage and an ongoing crisis with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
The news broke on Wednesday through a statement shared on X by political commentator Imran Wakili, who claimed that the mass layoff happened less than 24 hours after 90% of the affected employees joined the oil workers’ union.
According to a leaked internal memo dated September 25, 2025, and signed by the refinery’s Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, the decision was presented as part of a “total re-organisation” following reported incidents of sabotage in different sections of the multi-billion-dollar plant.
The directive ordered the workers to return all company property to their line managers and secure exit clearance immediately. It also instructed the finance department to compute and process their entitlements in line with their contracts.
While thanking the dismissed workers for their contributions, the refinery maintained that the drastic action was necessary to protect the facility’s operations.
This latest move deepens the refinery’s long-running feud with PENGASSAN, which has accused Dangote management of resisting unionization efforts within the company.
