IBADAN — Tragedy struck in the city of Ibadan when journalist Ojo Peter was gunned down in broad daylight by suspected armed robbers along the Molete–Oke Ado axis.
The incident happened on August 18, 2025, but the real cause of his death only came to light later. At first, many thought it was health-related—until his younger brother, Enahoro Peter, clarified that Ojo was attacked for the cross bag he carried.
According to eyewitnesses, Ojo pleaded with the assailants, shouting that the bag contained nothing valuable. Despite this, he was shot in the back and robbed.
Ojo, once a reporter with Parrot Extra and later with Daily Monitor, was widely mourned after the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) officially announced his passing on September 7.
His brother recounted how the police at Orita Challenge Division reached out to the family after recovering his damaged phone at the crime scene. “This is someone who left home in perfect health, only to be gunned down while trying to make ends meet,” Enahoro said in grief.
The Oyo State Police Command has since made arrests. Spokesperson CSP Adewale Osifeso confirmed that two suspects, already linked to multiple robberies in Ibadan, were intercepted around Imolefalafia with a motorcycle. One suspect was killed while resisting arrest, while the other is now in custody.
Police also revealed that the suspects were connected to another robbery and shooting that same day at Anfani Junction. Investigations are still ongoing, with authorities promising more updates as the case unfolds.
