Tragedy struck on Friday morning when a passenger bus somersaulted after a tyre burst, leaving six people dead and 19 others injured along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The accident happened around 11 a.m. at Osuponri Village, near the ICT Polytechnic, Itori, in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, the bus involved was a grey Toyota with registration number KJA 851 YH. It was carrying 27 passengers at the time of the crash.
Akinbiyi explained that the bus was at high speed when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to somersault several times.
“The accident claimed six lives, including the driver, while 19 others sustained different degrees of injuries,” he said.
He further disclosed that the injured victims, made up of five male adults, nine female adults, one male child, and four female children, were rushed to Ifo General Hospital for treatment. The remains of the deceased—two men, two women, one boy, and one girl—were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
While commiserating with the affected families, Akinbiyi urged drivers to avoid speeding and to stop using worn-out or fake tyres, stressing that tyre failure remains a major cause of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
TRACE, the Police, and the Federal Road Safety Corps have all extended condolences to the bereaved families, with the acting head of TRACE, Cdr. Omonayajo Elias, warning motorists to prioritize safety at all times.
