Bonu Applauds Governor Sanwo-Olu as Contractor Mobilizes to Site for Badagry West Re-electrification

After years of darkness and growing public outcry, hope has finally returned to the people of Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) as rehabilitation work begins on the long-abandoned electricity infrastructure. This development comes following the mobilization of contractors to site for the re-electrification project, a promise recently made—and now fulfilled—by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Solomon Saanu Bonu, expressed deep appreciation to the governor for keeping his word. In a telephone conversation with Badagry Today, Bonu described the move as a major milestone in restoring power to communities that have been plunged into darkness for over a year.

"Anytime I remember my people are in darkness due to the total collapse of electricity in the area, I feel unfulfilled," Bonu said. "But with this commencement, I can heave a deep sigh of relief. I thank my Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for fulfilling yet another promise. He is, no doubt, a 'talk-and-do' leader."

The re-electrification project, which involves the rehabilitation of the 33kV power line running through the Gbaji-Seme and Owode-Apa corridors of Badagry West, is being executed by CircuitPath Project Solutions Limited under the supervision of the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

On-site visits confirm the presence of active workers and construction equipment, with a project signboard outlining the scope of work—replacement of transformers, power line rehabilitation, and associated electrical installations.

This project is expected to restore and stabilize power supply to a number of communities that have endured prolonged blackouts, including Gbaji, Apa, Owode, Seme, and Asipa.

The restoration effort didn’t happen overnight. In October 2024, Hon. Bonu raised a motion on the floor of the Lagos State House of Assembly, bringing the plight of his constituents to the attention of the government. He passionately appealed to both the state and electricity distribution authorities to address the power collapse that had crippled social and economic activities across the council.

Earlier this year, Bonu announced that Governor Sanwo-Olu had approved funding for the re-electrification project, following extensive stakeholder engagements. The commencement of physical work on the ground is now seen as the first tangible result of those efforts.

While the Lagos State Government has yet to issue a formal public statement detailing the full scope or timeline for the project, the visible progress on site has ignited optimism among residents and business owners.

Local traders, transport operators, artisans, and youth groups say they look forward to an end to the power blackout that has hampered businesses, disrupted education, and affected healthcare delivery.

“Our lives have been on hold,” said one resident in Apa. “But with this new work going on, we finally believe that light is returning—not just power, but hope for a better future.”

The re-electrification of Badagry West is expected to trigger a broader revival of economic activity across the region, offering relief to thousands who have borne the brunt of a power-deprived existence for far too long.

As implementation progresses, the people of Badagry West watch with cautious optimism, trusting that this project will not only restore light but also renew trust in governance.
