In a rare display of honesty and professionalism, the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Badagry Unit Command, on Monday returned ₦692,850 in cash and mobile phones recovered from the scene of a ghastly accident to the victims’ relatives.
Recall that a Mazda commercial bus conveying 18 passengers from Mile 2 collided with a stationary truck at the Atura axis of the Badagry Expressway. The accident claimed eight lives, while 13 persons sustained critical injuries.
Presenting the recovered items to the families, the Unit Commander, Mr. William Manga, said the crash occurred on July 6, with six people dying on the spot while two others died on the way to the hospital. He confirmed that 13 others suffered varying degrees of injuries.
“The FRSC personnel exhibited professionalism during the rescue operation by taking the 13 injured victims to the General Hospital in Badagry for medical attention,” he said.
“They also deposited the eight deceased passengers at the hospital’s morgue.”
Manga noted that some relatives of the victims had earlier come to collect amounts such as ₦40,000 and ₦5,000.
He attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speeding and reckless overtaking by the bus driver.
Receiving the recovered money on behalf of four victims, Alhaji Tsoho Babangida thanked the commander for reaching out to them after the tragic incident.
Also speaking, Alhaji Haruna Sanni, Chairman of the Arewa Community in Badagry, said the victims were traders from Mile 2 heading to Seme to buy carrots, Irish potatoes, and other fruits and vegetables.
Sanni commended the FRSC unit commander for the initiative and for ensuring the victims’ belongings were returned to their families.
