BLACK SUNDAY TRAGEDY: 15 Feared Dead as Bus Rams Into Trailer at Atura on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday as an 18-seater commercial bus travelling from Lagos to Badagry crashed into a stationary trailer at Atura, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, leaving at least 15 people feared dead.

Eyewitnesses told Badagry Today that the bus, reportedly speeding from the Mile 2 axis, collided head-on with the trailer, which had come to a sudden stop at a military checkpoint in Atura bus stop at the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

“All the passengers on the bus died on the spot. The bodies were later moved to the Badagry General Hospital morgue,” a witness who was at the scene recounted.

According to multiple accounts, the trailer was stopped abruptly by military personnel stationed at the checkpoint. The sudden halt reportedly gave the oncoming bus driver no time to react, leading to the fatal crash.

“The trailer just hit its brakes immediately after it was flagged down by soldiers. The bus was moving very fast and slammed into it before the driver could even touch his own brakes,” another eyewitness added.

The bus has been towed to a police station in Badagry.

The authorities are yet to confirm the accident

The tragic incident has sparked concerns over the safety of checkpoints on major highways, with residents and road users calling for better traffic control measures and caution by security agents.

As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had officially commented on the incident. However, rescue officials were seen clearing the wreckage and helping to restore movement along the busy expressway.

This latest accident adds to the growing number of tragic road crashes on the Lagos-Badagry corridor, often attributed to overspeeding, reckless driving, and lack of safety enforcement.

Authorities are urged to act swiftly to prevent such avoidable loss of lives in the future.
