Badagry LG Chairman Hunpe Denies ₦200 Daily Levy on POS Operators, Says Claim Is False and Misleading

The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, has firmly denied reports of a proposed or imposed daily levy of ₦200 on Point of Sale operators within the council area, describing the claim as unauthorised, misleading, and not originating from the local government.

In an official rebuttal issued from the Office of the Executive Chairman on Monday, February 2, 2026, Hunpe said neither his office, the council, nor any recognised revenue authority of the local government approved or directed such a levy on POS operators.

According to the chairman, his attention was drawn to an open letter written by Mr. Arebi Oluranti Zechariah on behalf of concerned POS operators, alleging that the local government planned to introduce a daily ₦200 charge. Hunpe clarified that no circular, directive, or communication was ever issued by the council proposing such a levy.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no such levy emanated from, nor was it authorised by, Badagry Local Government, the Office of the Chairman, the Revenue Committee, or any official council communication channel,” the statement read.

He urged POS operators and members of the public to disregard any information suggesting otherwise, stressing that such claims did not reflect the position or policy direction of his administration.

Hunpe reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fair, lawful, and people-centred revenue administration, noting that Badagry Local Government aligns strictly with constitutional and statutory provisions guiding taxation and levies. He referenced his recent participation at the Tax Reform Summit 2025 on the Lagos Implementation Roadmap, where stakeholders focused on eliminating multiple taxation, harmonising levies, and ensuring compliance with the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

The chairman further disclosed that the council has constituted a Revenue Committee headed by a retired council treasurer, Mr. Sunday Agosu, alongside other experienced professionals, to ensure transparency and due process in revenue matters.

He emphasized that no levy or fee would be introduced without going through the council’s legislative process, including consultations with community leaders and relevant associations.

Highlighting his administration’s support for POS operators, Hunpe recalled that during his first 100 days in office, the local government empowered 100 residents with POS machines and start-up capital as part of efforts to promote financial inclusion and livelihood support.

“Against this backdrop, it would be insensitive and counterproductive for the same administration to introduce or impose any levy that would undermine their sustainability,” he stated.

The rebuttal followed an open letter from POS operators in Badagry, who had raised concerns over the alleged levy, citing multiple taxation, low profit margins, and the prevailing economic hardship in the country. The operators had argued that such a daily charge would be illegal, burdensome, and harmful to financial inclusion in underserved communities.

Hunpe assured POS operators of the council’s willingness to engage, collaborate, and consult with stakeholders to ensure that revenue policies support, rather than stifle, legitimate businesses.

Badagry Local Government, he said, remains open to dialogue and committed to protecting small businesses while pursuing lawful and sustainable development for the area.
