President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The appointment was unanimously approved by the National Council of State during its meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name to the Council for consideration, following the completion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s 10-year tenure in October 2025.
In a post on X, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development.
Professor Amupitan, 58, is a renowned Professor of Law from Kogi State. His appointment marks the first time someone from the North-Central state will head the electoral commission.
