A 38-year-old woman from Bulawayo has been remanded in custody after allegedly pouring boiling water on her sister’s maid in what authorities have described as a shocking and unprovoked act.
According to Linda Ikeji, the suspect, Privilege Moyo of Emganwini suburb, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Archie Wochiwunga on charges of physical abuse.
According to Prosecutor Audrey Kufandikanwe, the incident happened on August 28. Moyo, who is the sister of the maid’s employer, allegedly stormed into the kitchen, grabbed a pot of boiling water, and poured it over the maid, Bethia Moyo.
“The accused suddenly took a pot of boiling water from the kitchen and poured it on the complainant without any provocation,” Kufandikanwe told the court.
Bethia sustained serious burns to her face and chest and was rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals, where she is still receiving treatment.
Magistrate Wochiwunga ordered that Privilege Moyo be remanded in custody until September 17 and undergo psychiatric evaluation by two doctors to assess her mental condition at the time of the attack.
The case was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, who have confirmed that investigations are still ongoing.
