Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clamp down on politicians already engaging in early campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Vanguard News speaking on Sunday Politics, Falana described the practice as “abnormal” and argued that offenders should be dragged before the courts to test the strength of existing laws.
The law cannot anticipate every situation. Lawmakers assumed they were dealing with a disciplined political class—but clearly, that’s not the case. Since politicians are now violating the rules, it is the responsibility of INEC, backed by the Constitution and the Electoral Act, to issue guidelines and take action,” he said.
He emphasized that INEC has both the authority and duty to act decisively. INEC should take some of these people to court. Let them appear before a judge and argue, ‘My Lord, there’s no penalty for this.
Falana further warned that refusal to obey any court ruling on the matter would amount to contempt of court, which carries a jail term.
