Ohanaeze Leader Urges FG to Release Nnamdi Kanu for Medical Care

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), so he can receive proper medical treatment.

In a short video message shared on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata also urged Igbos across Nigeria to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise and ensure they get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

According to punch Kanu’s detention has remained one of Nigeria’s most controversial political and security issues. First arrested in 2015 on charges of treasonable felony, he fled the country after jumping bail in 2017. He was later rearrested in Kenya in June 2021 in a controversial operation and has since been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Speaking in the video, Azuta-Mbata stressed that keeping Kanu in detention serves no real benefit to the government.

He said, I call on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu and allow him to seek medical care. The government must ensure his safety and welfare, and it is time to embrace a political solution rather than prolonging his detention.
