The Federal Government has announced that Friday, September 5, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday in celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
In the statement, the government congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, urging them to reflect on the Prophet’s exemplary virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.
Nigerians of all faiths were also encouraged to use the occasion to pray for lasting peace, security, and stability in the country, while supporting the government’s efforts to strengthen unity and drive development.
“The Minister of Interior wishes all Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration,” the statement read. “This occasion provides yet another opportunity to promote brotherhood, peaceful coexistence, and the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.”
The government further appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of its policies geared towards national unity and sustainable growth.
Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), is celebrated worldwide with prayers, lectures, processions, and acts of charity. In Nigeria, it is recognised as a national holiday, reflecting both the country’s large Muslim population and its long tradition of honouring major Islamic festivals.
