All Activities Shut Down in LASU as ASUU, Other Staff Unions Begin Indefinite Strike

All activities at Lagos State University (LASU) have come to a halt as the university’s staff unions begin an indefinite strike.

The strike, which started on Thursday, July 31, 2025, was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of LASU. This committee includes all four staff unions: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a joint letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions said they were left with no choice but to take action due to unresolved issues with the university management. The letter was signed by leaders and secretaries of the four unions and was made available to the press on Friday.

The unions instructed all their members across LASU's main campus, LASU College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, and the Epe campus to immediately stop work and leave their duty posts.

The statement read in part:

“Following the decision reached at the emergency congress of the Joint Action Committee, we hereby inform you that an indefinite strike action has commenced across Lagos State University.

The strike will continue until all staff demands are fully met by the appropriate authorities.

All staff members in LASU, LASUCOM, and the Epe campus are directed to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts immediately.”

The unions ended the letter by thanking the management for its usual support and asked for understanding.

This strike comes just days before students were scheduled to begin their second-semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session on Monday. With the strike now in place, both academic and administrative activities in the university are completely grounded.
