A midnight accident involving three young women on Kingsway Road, Alfred Rewane area of Lagos, has sparked outrage over what has been described as a complete breakdown of emergency response services in the state.
According to a Facebook post by popular social media critic and influencer, Iyen Na Nice, the incident occurred late Sunday night. Two of the women reportedly sustained severe head injuries in the crash, prompting passersby and concerned individuals to call for medical help.
Among those who rushed to their aid was Dr. Agboola Kotun, the Medical Director of Lifebridge Medical Hospital, located along Agungi-Lekki Expressway. Dr. Kotun, who was passing by, joined a paramedic to administer first aid at the scene.
However, what followed has drawn sharp criticism.
“We waited over an hour and a half for the Lagos State Ambulance Service. Nothing came,” Dr. Kotun said in frustration. “Eventually, I had to use my private car to rush the victims to General Hospital, Lagos. One of the injured women’s husbands — an American-trained urologist — drove from Arepo and arrived at the hospital in under thirty minutes. But the state emergency service couldn’t respond in 90 minutes?”
Dr. Kotun did not mince words as he slammed the current Lagos State government for what he described as “decay and neglect” in the once-functional emergency service system.
“Former Governor Fashola established a solid ambulance system, placing emergency vehicles at strategic locations across the state. Governor Ambode improved on it and made emergency responses more proactive. In fact, that was one area Lagosians commended him almost 100 percent,” he wrote.
“Sadly, Governor Sanwo-Olu has not only failed to maintain the structure he met, but has dragged emergency services ten years backward. It is shameful. It is tragic.”
Meanwhile, the two victims are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Lagos, while the third woman escaped with minor injuries.
Residents and stakeholders are calling on the state government to urgently review and revive the emergency response framework before more lives are needlessly lost.
