As preparations intensify for the upcoming Lagos Local Government elections, the Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the command, the restriction will be in effect from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day and will cover all roads and waterways within Lagos State. The move, the police say, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
In addition to the movement ban, the police have rolled out a number of other regulations. Armed escorts and private security personnel attached to VIPs will not be allowed to accompany their principals to polling units. The use of sirens and covered number plates on election day is also strictly prohibited.
The command emphasized that no vehicles, including those belonging to quasi-security outfits or state-owned security agencies, will be permitted on the roads during the restriction hours. It noted that, in accordance with the Electoral Act, only federal security agencies are authorized to participate in election security operations.
However, exemptions have been made for vehicles providing essential services, including medical emergencies, and for duly accredited officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC). Accredited election observers and journalists on official election duties are also exempt, provided they display their LASIEC-issued identification tags at all times.
All personnel involved in the election, including media practitioners and observers, are expected to wear visible identification throughout the exercise.
The police also issued a stern warning to miscreants and political thugs to steer clear of polling units, collation centers, and any location designated for electoral activities. The command assured the public of its readiness to clamp down on any attempts to disrupt the process.
Residents are urged to remain law-abiding and vigilant. Suspicious movements or individuals should be reported immediately using the designated police emergency lines: 08063299264 or 08065154338.
The police concluded by reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and security during the election and called on all stakeholders to cooperate fully to ensure a smooth and credible process.
