There was palpable tension in Badagry on Friday morning at about 1:00am as unknown gunmen reportedly abducted two prominent traditional figures in the Mowo area of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Lagos State.
The victims — Chief Ayuba Olabimtan, the Baale of Osun-Egbado, and Chief Ademola Ajose, the Baba Oja of the same community — were forcefully taken from their homes in a coordinated late-night operation by heavily armed men suspected to be kidnappers.
According to Chief Kolawole Alabi, the Baale of Mowo, the assailants stormed the community in about five vehicles. Two of the men were seen wearing aprons marked “POLICE,” but eye witnesses say their violent and unprofessional conduct strongly suggested otherwise.
In a chilling account, the Chief Kolawole said the gunmen scaled the fence of Chief Ayuba’s residence, broke down his door, and forcefully entered the house. The chief, sensing danger, reportedly hid in the ceiling. However, the attackers threatened to harm his family and spray bullets into the ceiling, forcing him to surrender. He was then dragged away at gunpoint.
“They didn’t operate like the police,” Chief Kola told Badagry Today. “It was a violent raid. They took the Chief away and seized all phones in the house, including those belonging to his wife and other occupants.”
Also, an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity confirmed that the Baba Oja, Chief Ademola Ajose, was kidnapped using a similar pattern. His house was forcibly entered, and he was taken to an unknown location by the same group.
As of the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of both chiefs remain unknown, leaving family members and residents gripped with fear.
The incident was reported at the Morogbo Police Station. However, according to Gasali, the police denied knowledge of the arrests or any official operation involving the two chiefs. Officers have since visited the crime scenes and taken statements from eyewitnesses, many of whom had their phones confiscated during the attacks.
The Lagos State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, further deepening anxiety in the affected communities.
This abduction adds to growing concerns about insecurity in some parts of Lagos’ border communities, where residents have long called for stronger police presence and quicker response to emergencies.
