A passionate appeal has been made to the Federal Government for the immediate release of ₦6 billion earmarked for the long-abandoned reconstruction of the Gbaji-Apa-Owode Road in Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State. The call, made through an open letter signed by community representative Amb. Prince Sunday Oke (PSO), comes amid growing frustration over the project's stalled progress and the contractor’s alleged withdrawal due to lack of funds.
Addressed to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the letter expressed deep gratitude for the Governor’s recent interventions in the area, including the restoration of electricity and the approval of nine transformers to support the community’s re-electrification efforts. The residents praised the Governor’s leadership and commitment to grassroots development, describing him as a “dedicated leader” with a vision to make Lagos “the best city in the world.”
However, the letter turned urgent as it drew attention to the ongoing neglect of the vital Gbaji-Apa-Owode Road, a project said to have been facilitated with ₦6 billion by Hon. Sesi Whingan, the Member of the House of Representatives representing Badagry Federal Constituency.
“We are yet to see any meaningful progress on the road,” the letter read. “We humbly request Mr. Governor’s intervention to help us liaise with Mr. President for the release of the funds.”
The residents noted that the road project holds significant importance for the people of Badagry West LCDA, as it is the only major link between several riverine and agrarian communities. The abandonment of the project has left thousands of residents stranded, stifled economic activities, and made transportation a daily nightmare.
“Our tone may seem urgent, but it comes from a place of hope and faith in our leader,” Prince Sunday Oke wrote on behalf of the community. “We believe that with Mr. Sanwo-Olu’s influence, the Presidency will act swiftly to release the funds needed to resume work on this long-overdue project.”
He emphasized that the completion of the Gbaji-Apa-Owode Road would have a life-changing impact on the people of Badagry West, improving access to education, healthcare, and markets, while also boosting local trade and tourism in the border community.
The residents concluded by reaffirming their confidence in Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, expressing hope that their plea would receive urgent attention and lead to a speedy resolution of the crisis.
The Gbaji-Apa-Owode Road, which was once seen as a gateway to development for communities along the Badagry-West corridor, remains a symbol of dashed hopes — unless swift governmental action is taken.
