Muhammed Babangida, son of former Nigerian military president, Ibrahim Babangida, has debunked claims that he rejected his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), describing the reports as completely false and misleading.
In a statement released on Monday, Babangida expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment, calling the circulating rumours on social media “malicious fabrications aimed at misleading the public and undermining the administration.”
“I wish to make it absolutely clear that I have wholeheartedly accepted the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture. I am grateful to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence he has shown in me,” he said.
He also warned that those behind the fake news would not go unpunished. “We will ensure that the peddlers of these false stories are investigated and brought to book. This type of misinformation must not be allowed to thrive,” the statement added.
Babangida urged Nigerians to always verify information before sharing, and to rely on official channels for credible news.
Kazeem Afegbua, a long-time spokesperson for former President Babangida, also confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the younger Babangida has accepted the appointment.
His new role as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture is part of President Tinubu’s latest round of appointments designed to inject fresh energy and leadership into key government institutions.
The Bank of Agriculture plays a major role in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural growth and boosting rural development across the country.
