The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, urging citizens to celebrate the milestone with unity, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted Nigeria’s warmth, hospitality and cultural diversity, as well as its abundant human and natural resources, as major national assets capable of driving economic growth and prosperity. He also stressed that peace and stability remain essential conditions for sustainable national development.

The minister called on Nigerians to emulate the patriotism and sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers by contributing to the building of a nation that future generations would be proud of. He noted that Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a strength and that collective determination remains vital to achieving a stronger and more prosperous country.

“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.

The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government, through the Renewed Hope Agenda, remains committed to improving the country and creating a better future for its citizens. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an enabling environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.

Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to use the Independence anniversary as an opportunity to demonstrate national unity, patriotism, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. He also paid tribute to Nigeria’s past heroes, while encouraging Nigerians to sustain the values of patriotism and national unity as the country marks another milestone in its journey as an independent nation.
