Three foreign nationals, two Nigerians and one Congolese have been arrested in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, for alleged immigration fraud after entering the country illegally and attempting to obtain Malawian passports using forged documents.
The suspects have been identified as Steve Leader Tsamala, 36, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigerians Bobby Alex Amaliri and John Osita Nwogbo, both 43. Authorities believe all three men are residents of South Africa who travelled to Malawi in an attempt to acquire Malawian passports, which they hoped would improve their employment opportunities in the region.
According to police, the men were found in possession of newly issued Malawian national identity cards and fake citizenship certificates.
“I can confirm that we have arrested three foreign nationals, one Congolese and two Nigerians based in South Africa for illegal entry, forgery, and obtaining registration by false pretences,” said Inspector Hastings Chigalu, spokesperson for Lilongwe Police.
Investigators suspect the trio were assisted by a Malawian accomplice known only as Ishmael, who is currently at large. The case has raised concerns about a possible wider network involving officials within the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of illegal entry, forgery, and obtaining registration under false pretences. Meanwhile, police say investigations are ongoing to uncover any additional accomplices involved in the suspected syndicate.
