Tragedy struck on Friday night when a Dangote truck crushed five people to death at the Alapoka area along Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident happened around 8:30 p.m. The truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into a tricycle carrying five passengers.
Akinbiyi confirmed that all five occupants of the tricycle died instantly. The vehicles involved were identified as an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with registration number GRZ 767 XA.
“An eyewitness said the truck driver didn’t realize he had hit the tricycle until the truck’s tyres crushed it and its passengers,” Akinbiyi explained.
Following the crash, the Acting Head of TRACE, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional TRACE Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue team to the scene. However, they were reportedly attacked by angry residents who blamed reckless driving by heavy-duty trucks for frequent accidents in the area. The situation was later brought under control with the intervention of Amotekun Corps and other security agencies.
The bodies of the victims were taken to a nearby morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
