President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced sweeping changes in the leadership of Nigeria’s armed forces, appointing new service chiefs in what the presidency describes as a move to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
The announcement was made on Friday through a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, titled “Tinubu Changes Service Chiefs.”
According to the statement, General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff, taking over from General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu becomes the new Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke assumes office as Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been named Chief of Naval Staff.
However, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
President Tinubu expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa, and other former service chiefs for what he described as their patriotic service and steadfast leadership during their tenure.
He urged the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by upholding the values of professionalism, vigilance, and unity that define the Nigerian Armed Forces.
All the appointments take immediate effect.
