The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, has described the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) as the pride of Badagry and one of the most enduring federal institutions driving Nigeria’s administrative and human capacity development.
Hunpe stated this on Monday, September 22, 2025, during a courtesy and familiarization visit to the Director-General of ASCON, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, at the institution’s headquarters in Topo, Badagry. The DG, alongside her management team, warmly welcomed the council boss and his entourage.
Reflecting on his long-standing advocacy for ASCON, Hunpe recalled his days in the National Assembly when he raised concerns over the future of the institution. “I once wrote a letter titled ‘ASCON Must Not Die’ to the Head of Service. That intervention eventually paved the way for the construction of the 1,500-capacity hall and new staff quarters that stand proudly today. For me, ASCON is not just an institution—it is Badagry’s pride and Nigeria’s asset. As a local government, we will continue to support and defend it,” Hunpe said.
He commended the College for over five decades of unwavering service in training top government officials, which, he said, has significantly contributed to both the socio-economic and administrative development of the country.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Adepoju outlined some of the institution’s recent strides, including the solarisation of its health centre, the establishment of a 100-capacity training facility, and the successful presentation of ASCON’s flagship projects to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for national recognition. She further revealed that the College is set to host Heads of Parastatals from across the country in the coming weeks.
“ASCON was deliberately founded to build human capacity for governance in Nigeria. It is a legacy we must protect and nurture. The support from our host community and leaders like Hon. Hunpe is crucial to sustaining this vision,” Adepoju emphasized.
The DG lauded Hunpe’s visit as proof of his commitment to strengthening ties between the College and the local government, noting that Badagry has always been a dependable partner in ASCON’s journey.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Mr. B. O. Eniayejuni, Director of Studies, expressed appreciation to the Chairman and his team, pledging that ASCON would continue to collaborate with the local council to foster leadership development, responsive governance, and socio-economic growth for both Badagry and Nigeria at large.
Hunpe was accompanied on the visit by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Taiwo Towolawi; Council Manager, Mrs. Mary Abosede Olusanya; and other senior officials of the Council.
The visit, observers say, not only renewed ties between the Council and ASCON but also underscored the importance of sustaining institutions that embody Badagry’s heritage and Nigeria’s development aspirations.
