In a historic and highly symbolic transition that blends tradition with modern governance, the outgoing Supervisor for Works in Badagry Local Government, Chief Sulaimon Sewanu Iroko, has been crowned the Possu of Badagry Kingdom — one of the most revered and spiritually significant traditional titles in Lagos State.

The coronation ceremony, which is taking place today in the ancient town of Badagry, is expected to draw large crowds, including traditional rulers, chiefs, political figures, cultural enthusiasts, and residents of the coastal town who are proud to witness this deeply cultural moment.

Chief Iroko, widely respected for his exceptional contributions to infrastructure and community development during Hon. Onilude Segun Adeniran’s two-term administration, is now transitioning from public service into a spiritual and traditional leadership role that dates back centuries.

As Supervisor for Works, Sewanu Iroko was the engine behind many of the notable projects that reshaped the physical landscape of Badagry in the last eight years — from road rehabilitations and drainage constructions to the building of public utilities and community halls. His appointment as Possu is seen by many as a continuation of service, but now on a more spiritual and cultural level.

Who is the Possu?

The Possu of Badagry is not just a ceremonial title — he is the Chief Priest of the entire Badagry Kingdom. The role carries immense traditional and religious weight. As one of the seven White Cap High Chiefs of Badagry, the Possu serves as both a custodian of the town’s spiritual heritage and a key figure in the traditional administration of the kingdom.

He plays a central role during major cultural festivals and traditional rites — from the sacred breaking of kola nuts with powerful incantations, to offering prayers of atonement and peace on behalf of the people. He helps ensure the spiritual well-being of the kingdom and preserves the customs that bind the eight quarters of Badagry together under the supreme authority of the Akran, the paramount ruler of Badagry.

For many residents, today marks not just the elevation of a new Possu, but a powerful connection between the old and the new. Chief Iroko's transition into this revered role has been described by observers as “divine timing” and a “natural progression” for a man who has always served with humility, strength, and a deep love for Badagry.

Speaking ahead of the coronation, a community elder described the moment as “a spiritual blessing for Badagry,” adding that “Chief Sewanu Iroko has served the people with his hands — now he will serve with his spirit.”

With his new title as High Chief Posu, Iroko now steps into the sacred circle of Badagry’s traditional institution, where his voice will echo in rituals, his wisdom will guide the quarters, and his leadership will remain woven into the spiritual fabric of the kingdom.

As drums roll and chants rise in the heart of Badagry today, one thing is certain — a new Possu has risen, and with him comes a renewed hope for peace, unity, and cultural preservation in the land of ancestors.

From Badagry Today - Congratulations to Chief Sulaimon Sewanu Iroko, the new Possu of Badagry Kingdom!
