History was made in Badagry as Dr. Michael Sonayon Kunnuji, the 5th Gagbo Menu Toyon of Ajido Kingdom, was officially welcomed into the Badagry Chieftaincy Council. His induction followed the state government's formal recognition of his traditional title.
The ceremony which recently took place during a statutory meeting of traditional rulers at the Badagry Local Government Secretariat. It marked a significant moment, blending tradition with modern leadership values. Dr. Kunnuji, who has a background in engineering and philanthropy, promised to bring transparency, development, and a results-driven mindset to the grassroots.
Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Kunnuji stressed the importance of honesty in leadership.
"It won’t be easy. The truth is always bitter, but I will always speak the truth. That is my number one goal," he said.
Dr. Kunnuji, who holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States, said his global experience has shaped his vision for community progress.
"We’ve seen how things work abroad — roads, healthcare, education, food systems. These are basic needs, and I plan to bring that same thinking home," he added.
Although he formally became the Gagbo of Ajido over three years ago, following a rigorous selection process and a grand traditional ceremony by the Osa Lagoon, his recent recognition by the Lagos State Government has now earned him a seat at the council of chiefs.
Over the years, Dr. Kunnuji has personally funded several development projects in Ajido, including electricity transformers, a skills acquisition centre, and student scholarships. He encouraged residents to demand good governance from their leaders.
"If a leader is mismanaging public funds, raise the alarm. It is the duty of the people to protect their community," he urged.
His induction was warmly received by fellow traditional rulers and community leaders, who praised his commitment to cultural values and his clear focus on development. Many expressed hope that his presence on the council would spark meaningful reforms across the entire Badagry division.
