Badagry Chosen for New Lagos Waste-to-Energy Project in Siemens Partnership

Lagos State is partnering with global technology giant Siemens to turn waste into electricity — and Badagry has been picked as one of the major project sites.

The new waste-to-energy project was unveiled on July 28, 2025, at the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa. The project is being coordinated by the Ministries of Environment and Water Resources, as well as Energy and Mineral Resources.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that Lagos produces up to 14,000 tonnes of waste every day. He explained that the new project will help convert part of this waste into useful energy, while also supporting existing waste-to-wealth programmes and supplying power to industries.

As part of the plan, a Material Recovery Facility will be set up in Badagry to help sort and process the waste before turning it into energy. Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, said the project is necessary because of Lagos’s fast-growing population and rising energy needs.

Siemens’ Commercial Director, Durgen Schumann, assured Lagos of the company’s full support. He said Siemens is committed to helping the state access cleaner, more reliable power through modern technology.

The project is expected to reduce pressure on landfills, boost electricity supply, and make Lagos a cleaner, more energy-efficient city — with Badagry playing a key role in the transformation.
