Another local government in Lagos has followed the recent trend of renaming streets after notable Nigerians and Yoruba icons.
This time, the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has changed the name of the popular Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Adedeji Street, in honour of award-winning rapper and Bariga-born star, Olamide, also known as Baddo.
The outgoing Chairman of the council, Kolade Alabi David, made the announcement before leaving office on Friday. He explained that the renaming is a way of celebrating people from Bariga and beyond who have positively represented Nigeria on the global stage through music, public service, and leadership.
“We took our time to reflect and recognize those who have put Bariga and Nigeria on the map through their talents and service,” he said. “Today, we officially rename some major streets in honour of their legacy.”
Here are some of the renamed streets:
-
Ilaje Road is now King Sunny Ade Road – in honour of the legendary Juju musician.
-
Bariga Road becomes Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way – named after Nigeria’s President.
-
Community Road, Akoka now Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Road – after the Lagos State Governor.
-
Ajidagan Street is now Olamide Adedeji (Baddo) Street.
-
Ifeanyi Street renamed Abolore Akande (9ice) Street.
-
Ayodele Street, Ladi-Lak now Tony Tetuila Street – after the famous Afro-pop singer.
-
Ilojo Crescent, Obanikoro renamed Bukayo Saka Street – in honour of the England and Arsenal football star of Nigerian descent.
This development comes just weeks after a memo from Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Surfaced online, where it renamed 24 streets, mostly replacing non-indigenous names with Yoruba ones.
