There was heightened security presence at the Lagos State Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogba on Monday, as the party prepares to officially unveil its candidates for the upcoming July 12 local government elections.
Men of the Nigeria Police Force, along with a patrol van, were stationed at the entrance of the secretariat, creating a tight security cordon around the premises. The development comes as the APC gears up for its campaign flag-off across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
According to the APC’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, the event will serve a dual purpose — the formal presentation of the party’s flagbearers and the official commencement of campaign activities for the grassroots polls.
The build-up to this moment has not been without controversy. The party’s May 10 primary elections triggered discontent among some aspirants and party loyalists, many of whom accused the leadership of candidate imposition. Dissatisfied with the process, aggrieved members held several protests demanding fairness and transparency.
In response, the APC leadership inaugurated a reconciliation committee in June to address internal disputes and mend cracks caused by the fallout of the primaries.
Despite the tensions, Monday’s activities mark a major step forward in the party’s efforts to consolidate support and present a united front ahead of the crucial July elections.
