You're Not Answerable to Your Predecessors, Obasa Schools Lagos LG Chairmen, Warns Overbearing former Council Bosses

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has sent a strong message to newly elected local government chairmen, urging them not to bow to undue pressure from their predecessors.

Speaking during a meeting with the council bosses on Wednesday, Obasa cautioned former chairmen of local governments and local council development areas (LCDAs) across the state to desist from interfering in the affairs of their successors.

According to him, many immediate past council leaders still attempt to exert influence and control over the new administrations, a development he described as both unhealthy and counterproductive.

“How can you be answerable to your predecessors?” the Speaker queried. “What you owe them is respect, not obedience. They have done their bit, and everybody is grateful. But you are the ones in the saddle now. So, take charge.”

Obasa stressed that the new chairmen must be given the space to deliver on their mandate without distractions. He urged the former officeholders to “let the new leaders breathe” and allow their achievements to speak for themselves.

“Let the public see that there are new sheriffs in town doing a good job. Don’t take their shine. Remove your grip on their necks,” he warned.

On financial matters, the Speaker advised the new council chiefs to be vigilant about inherited debts, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability.

“Before you start paying loans, ask questions. Where you are unsure of what the loan was used for, look through the books. If possible, renegotiate or restructure the terms for the benefit of your constituents,” he added.
